The demand for vintage trailers-the smaller the better- has risen dramatically in recent years, with the most in-demand trailers being “teardrops”, first manufactured in the 1930’s and containing just indoor sleeping space and an outdoor exterior kitchen. Also profiled in the book are “canned ham” trailers, whose shape resembles the profile of a can of ham; small-sized examples of America’s most beloved vintage trailer, the Airstream; minuscule gypsy caravans in Europe; and fiberglass trailers made in Canada. Two hundred color photographs showcase these trailers sleek exteriors, retro-styled interiors, and, in many cases, the restored classic cars that tow them. Teardrops and Tiny Trailers includes a resource section choke-full of places to locate vintage trailers, clubs to join, and rallies to attend. Take the ultimate round trip with these vintage tiny trailers.

After all, all of us involved in this camping-travel hobby of ours have at least one thing in common. We like getting up early, heading down the road, getting flat tires, overheating, fixing electrical problems, cursing the traffic, hoping we packed everything, remembering that we didn’t pack everything, repeatedly “MAPQUEST SUCKS!”, getting stuck behind slow moving trucks, then realizing that the people behind us are probably thinking the same thing, remembering more things we forgot, getting there late, setting up in the dark, remembering even more things we forgot, spraying for bugs and preparing for ants, thinking to ourselves “this awning didn’t seem this hard to put up last time”, and remembering only the next morning that “yes” there were raccoons out here and “YES” they do like digging in our trash bags while we sleep! WHEW! Sorry, got bit carried away. But hey, it’s all the fun we have that makes it all worth while!

We setup and watch as each trailer comes in. It’s wow, did you see that one? Hey, that’s so and so. And, while we’re watching, the campground fills up and the next time you look, the vintage village has become a real thing. There are friends and families, trailers galore and the quiet, empty campground has become a community. This does not happen when you go camping as a single unit. The other campers are nice but they are not our people. There’s something magic about looking out and seeing rows of vintage trailers and teardrops. It’s a place out of time, living history. And on the appointed day, people start packing up. You hear tent poles and trailer jacks being put away. Decorations come down and the vehicles are ready to go. People drive by and everyone waves. Soon it is just us again and the magic has gone. It’s always sad but we know that it will happen again and every time is does, the magic returns.

The exterior of his new A B C line was nearly identical to the Anderson Coach. In fact the 1949 and 1950 Anderson and A B C Super-Coaches are almost impossible to tell apart. Both companies produced an excellent coach, superior in workmanship and construction and became well-known in the trailer world as high-quality upper-end trailers. Interestingly enough both manufacturers out-grew their original factories almost around the same time. They were not travel trailers. As early as 1953 the Pinconning plant offered a 45 foot two bedroom luxury model with a Crosley White Steel Kitchen and a full automatic laundry! Price of such a mansion on wheels? A cool $6400.00 without options! The unit weighed 7500 lbs and had a drawbar weight of 750 lbs, definitely not something you would hitch up to your typical 1953 family car and for a weekend camping trip!

The 1960 models were still produced in the ABC high tradition but the quality and price was lowered in 1962 and each executive year saw a heavy reduction in design and quality. Two years later the factories were sold to Divco-Wayne and the once famous ABC name was used on a series of low-priced typical white box-type mobile homes.
