My love affair with vintage trailers started about ten years ago and grows stronger with every trailer and every piece of ephemera I find. I’m the crazy guy digging through that ratty box of photographs at the flea market and I’ve probably been in an E-bay bidding war with most of you for some obscure bit of paperwork that most people wouldn’t look at twice.
As some of you know, I co-authored the book “Trailer Travel, A Visual History of Mobile America”. My favorite part of putting it together was the personal photos. Since then, I have collected hundreds of images. There is something about these little windows into people’s lives that I find fascinating.
The more I collect, the more I began to find patterns. Pets are a big theme, as are people holding dead fish. Trailerittes love to fish! Men in uniforms, kids on bikes and lots and lots of folks just relaxing. Trailers are an extension of our lives and we take as much “home” with us as we can fit.
Until somebody invents a time machine, these images are the closest we will get to capturing the by gone days of all those trailerittes who shared the same passion for our homes on wheels.
I would like to share some of my collection with you each month. I’ll start with a few random images that are some of my favorites. Enjoy!
